Outsmarting the Confidence Crisis

In uncertain times, people's confidence collapses before their opportunities do. They stop seeing possibilities. They play small. They pull back when they should step forward.

While experts debate recession probabilities and AI disruptions, something more immediate is already happening: There’s a collective loss of nerve while social media is filled with "We're cooked" declarations in comment sections.

When confidence wavers, so does your vision.

The real plot twist? Those of us who've lived with dyslexia—who've had to zigzag while others zoomed straight ahead—have accidentally been training for exactly this moment.

We've unknowingly developed resilience muscles through years of finding workarounds when conventional paths failed.

Start Using LEX as a Weapon

When I discovered my dyslexia at 48, it finally explained the patterns of my entire career journey.

Suddenly my career path—from pottery studio to financial services to class action settlements to dyslexia advocacy—made sense.

I recognized how my ability to see connections across different fields had been my strength all along.

When LEX IS MORE

Career experts often focus on specialized expertise, but in today's environment, what matters more is your ability to adapt and connect ideas across different fields.

The skills many dyslexics have developed out of necessity—like finding alternate routes to solve problems, visualizing information rather than relying on text, or quickly adapting when standard approaches don't work—are exactly what's needed in rapidly changing environments.

The labels that once followed us ("can't focus," "disorganized," "too many unfinished projects") now look remarkably similar to the job descriptions of innovators and entrepreneurs.

Playing Defense Against Your Own Dreams

Finding your Zone of Power—that sweet intersection where passion and energy meet skills and opportunity—isn't just a nice idea for stable times. In uncertainty, it becomes your anchor when everyone else is drifting.

Those who've found their Zone understand something deeper: External circumstances can change overnight, but your internal drivers rarely do.

The mistake most people make in uncertainty is playing defense against their own dreams.

They rationalize retreating as "being practical." They convince themselves that now is the time to hunker down & shrink.

Most investors will tell you otherwise.

Guy, Interrupted

In my own journey, each apparent career "interruption" actually expanded my Zone.

From crafting pottery (working with my hands) to untangling complex class action settlements (working with my mind) to now helping others find their power (working with my heart)—the path wasn't linear, but the Zone kept expanding.

A time of uncertainty isn't when you should abandon your Zone of Power—it's actually when you need it most.

Use What You’ve Got

  1. Take small, consistent action:

  • Research from the University of Michigan shows that consistent micro-progress triggers dopamine release that fuels motivation more effectively than waiting for perfect conditions.

  • Their study found that dopamine continuously signals how valuable the current situation is regarding obtaining a reward, helping people decide how vigorously to work toward a goal. Umich.

  1. Find an accountability partner(s):

  • Studies from the American Society of Training and Development show you're 65% more likely to complete a goal when you commit to someone else.

  • Their research found that people are 65% likely to meet a goal after committing to another person, and chances of success increase to 95% when they build in ongoing meetings with their partners to check in on their progress. Entrepreneur
