🎧 Dyslexia's Greatest Hits

Have You Been Misled?

Hey LEX,

Finding out I had dyslexia was strange validation.

Making sense of years of struggling wasn't easy, but finally having dyslexia to point to was a relief.

While learning about dyslexia, I quickly hit the Superpowers narrative - the idea that we're naturally more talented and gifted than others.

This made me angry.

I wasn't any of these things. I couldn't check off Dyslexia's Greatest Hits.

And if I was supposedly all that, then why was processing, executive functioning, and following directions so damn hard for me?

  • Did I fail at being dyslexic?

  • Was I not dyslexic enough to make the team?

GRIT

If nothing else, I learned humility at a young age.

So the idea that just because I was dyslexic, I was somehow Chosen to see the big picture and catch patterns others missed was a “Hell Nah”!

I can appreciate and respect the Grit and Dedication it takes to BECOME gifted or talented.

But accepting a cape without ever taking a flying lesson? Pass.

So when I started creating dyslexia content, I couldn't lead with a Superpower angle I didn't believe in.

And look, if the Superpower story works for you, that’s great.

I’d never get in the way of what lights you up.

But me admitting I was better than others out of the box just because Google, books, and social media said so was a line I couldn't cross/ even if it was well-meaning.

SOS

That's when I found Arje-Aike de Haas and his research.

The scientific and documented studies made sense.

The path to how dyslexics earned their grit, gifts, and talent was explained - realistically.

Dyslexic strengths aren't born, they're built.

This concept became the foundation for Powered by Dyslexia:
Solutions Over Superpowers (SOS).

Thanks for being on this ride with me,
Claude
